How to Position for Professional Opportunities

Updated: Sep 11

“Success occurs when opportunity meets preparation.”

-Zig Ziglar.

When opportunity knocks is not the time to prepare, it is time to put on your blazer to go out and meet it. In this blog post, I am going to share three ways you can position today to find new opportunities.

1.Get Your CV/Resume Tailored for Specific Opportunities

If you want a job promotion, to become a Board Director, to position as a thought leader through speaking engagements, or to increase your visibility as a career or business professional, start preparing for these opportunities by tailoring your CV/Résumé to reflect the profile of a high-value expert in your niche.

How do you do this? You get your CV/Résumé optimized for opportunities that are specific to the roles you are applying for.

“It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one, than have an opportunity and not be prepared.”

-Whitney M. Young.

2.Leverage LinkedIn as a Personal Interview Platform

Did you know that you can use LinkedIn as your personal interview platform to position for any opportunity you would like to get?

Treat your LinkedIn Profile page as your CV/Résumé, and your engagements with your connections as your "answers" to whatever interview questions you imagine selection panels for your desired opportunities would ask you.

What does that even mean, Modesta? It means that you should intentionally connect with the people you would want need to open doors of opportunity for you. Then, post, repost, and comment about issues that profile and position you as their go-to professional in that field.

When you consistently do this, you start building your personal brand as an expert, thereby attracting (rather than pursuing) the people and opportunities you want to be approached for.

3.Join Professional Groups

"There is immense power when a group of people with similar interests gets together to work towards the same goals."

- Idowu Koyenikan

Groups are powerful platforms of opportunity.

Want to position for opportunities, join and leverage groups?

Being part of a network, whether that be a work committee, college WhatsApp Group, or LinkedIn and Facebook professional groups, gives you access to strategic people and opportunities you may otherwise not personally know nor have access to.

Groups also give you a warm audience to connect with and advance your agenda.

The genius of this is that once you add value and gain credibility and reliability as a trusted solution provider, it is others in the groups, and not yourself that will be sharing word-of-mouth referrals and recommendations to the people and organizations you want to position to.
