How Competitive Are Your Skills?

Many leaders at the uppermost branches of their organizations get complacent about upgrading their skills. They assume being at the top of their organizations automatically puts them at the top of global competition.
This is a mistake.
While leaders may have the competencies listed on their job descriptions, their positions exist in an ever-shifting global context where industry developments, standards, best practices, and technology require them to continuously level up to stay competitive.
“If you don't have a competitive advantage, don't compete.”
-Jack Welch.
Here's how to evaluate and build your global competitiveness in three stages:
Stage I: Evaluate Your Position Competitiveness
1.Do an online search of the five best in-world companies in your field. 2.Look for the job descriptions (vacancy postings) for positions similar to yours and highlight the keywords in the role, responsibilities, and requirements of the job.
3.Look at your current job descriptions and note the keywords listed there.
4.Compare the keywords in your position description with each similar global position to note differences in knowledge, skills, experience, certifications, memberships, etcetera.
5.For each indicator, ask yourself, on a scale of 1 to 5, how globally competitive is my current position? 6.Develop a skills upgrade plan for areas you score below 4.
Stage II: Evaluate Your Profile Competitiveness
1.Look at the five best-in-world companies in your field once again.
2.Do a LinkedIn search of the five people currently holding those positions and view their education, experience, skills, and certifications.
3.Compare their profiles with yours, asking yourself, on a scale of 1 to 5, how globally competitive is my profile in education, experience, skills, certifications, and memberships?

Stage III: Plan Your Profile Upgrade
Develop a skills development plan for areas you score below 4 that you need to upgrade to become globally competitive in your field.
How to Get an Instant Profile Facelift
Go back to the profiles you viewed and note the keywords and language in CVs (résumés), bios, and LinkedIn Profiles. Then, incorporate your CV, bio, and LinkedIn Profile to include the keywords, adjectives, and phrases used to immediately elevate the global competitiveness of your profile.
